Background of the Study

Ransomware attacks are a growing threat to organizations worldwide, including universities, which are often targeted due to their valuable data, financial resources, and relatively weak cybersecurity defenses (Bello & Nwafor, 2024). These attacks typically involve malware that encrypts critical files or systems, demanding a ransom for their release. Universities, including Federal University, Gashua, face significant challenges in mitigating and responding to ransomware threats due to the diversity of systems in use and the high volume of user-generated content.

The impact of ransomware can be catastrophic, resulting in data loss, financial damage, and reputational harm. Effective mitigation strategies involve regular backups, timely software updates, staff training on phishing prevention, and advanced security measures such as intrusion detection and prevention systems (Olowu et al., 2023).

This study investigates the effects of ransomware attacks on the network infrastructure of Federal University, Gashua, analyzing the potential risks and proposing solutions to enhance ransomware resilience.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Gashua, has experienced several security breaches, with ransomware attacks being one of the primary concerns. These attacks result in significant operational disruptions, financial losses, and compromised research data. The lack of an integrated security framework and preparedness against ransomware poses a serious threat to the university’s academic and administrative operations.

This study aims to investigate the effects of ransomware attacks on the university's network and propose comprehensive solutions for mitigating such attacks.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of ransomware attacks on the network and systems of Federal University, Gashua.

  2. To assess the existing cybersecurity measures and their effectiveness in preventing ransomware attacks.

  3. To recommend strategies and tools for improving the university's defenses against ransomware.

Research Questions

  1. What are the direct and indirect effects of ransomware attacks on Federal University, Gashua’s network?

  2. How effective are current cybersecurity measures in preventing ransomware attacks?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to strengthen defenses against ransomware at the university?

Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the impact of ransomware on university networks and offer practical solutions for reducing the risk of such attacks. The findings will assist university IT administrators, cybersecurity professionals, and policymakers in strengthening ransomware defenses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the effects of ransomware attacks on the network infrastructure of Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State. It does not cover broader cybersecurity issues or other forms of cyberattacks.

Definitions of Terms

  • Ransomware: Malicious software that encrypts data and demands payment for decryption.

  • Intrusion Detection System (IDS): A system designed to monitor network traffic for suspicious activity and potential threats.

  • Backup Strategy: The process of regularly copying data to prevent loss in case of an attack or system failure.
